6 Ways to Improve the Speed and Performance of Your WordPress Website

6 Ways to Improve the Speed and Performance of Your WordPress Website

Everything is speeding up. Many people want to have the most important information as quickly as possible and to get it without unnecessary waiting. Speed is especially expected these days when browsing websites. Poor performance and slow loading times lead to an increase in the bounce rate. In today’s article, you can learn how to help speed up your website in WordPress.

Why Is Website Performance Important?

Google recommends 5 seconds or less as the most optimal loading speed for 3G connections. If your loading time goes from 1 second to 3, the likelihood of bounce rate increases by 32 %. If your site takes 1 second to load, it increases by up to 123 %! According to a Google analysis (2018), mobile sites take up to 15 seconds to load on average! Website speedaffects nearly 70 % of consumers. The probability of making a purchase increases with website performance. If your website is slow, you’re losing customers and lowering your conversion rate. Your website speed is also a very significant SEO factor. That’s why we always try to keep an eye on the speed and performance when creating a website in WordPress, and we do everything we can to optimize it properly without using too many plugins. You can get an objective overviewof your website speed using various tools. We recommend Google PageSpeed Insights, but there are many others such as GTmetrix or WebPageTest. Let’s take a look at some of the ways in which we improve website performance and optimize it.

1. Less Ads

A large number of ads can be detrimental to your website, as ads load JavaScript, CSS and media, which can greatly slow down the page and also degrade the user experience.

2.  Divide Long Pages

Long pages slow down the loading of the site.

  • If one of your web pages has too much content, it might be better to divide it into several pages.
  • Also keep length in mind when writing articles for your blog. Sometimes it’s better to split an article into multiple articles, which will also help speed up your site.

3. Latest Versions of WordPress, Plugins and PHP

WordPress plugin developers are constantly working on improvements, so it’s a beneficial to update them regularly. The PHP version also has a big impact on the performance of a WordPress website. Cloudways published the results of their benchmarking test, which measured site performance improvement from PHP version 5.6 to 8.0. The graph below shows that performance is continuously improving. Compared to the current PHP 8.0 with the fastest load time of 164 ms, PHP 5.6 came out almost 3 times slower.

4. Caching

Preload and prepares page content to minimize calculating and loading from the database when accessing the page. The user receives a preloaded version when the page is loaded, which can increase the loading time of the site by up to several times. In order to be able to resolve data requests faster in the future, caching stores this data. A Caching plugin should definitely be partof every production site because it will give you a huge increase of site performance. For our WordPress clients, we set up Redis Cache, which enables caching using an in-memory database.

5. CDN (Content Delivery Network)

  • This is a specific group of servers that are geographically closer to your visitors, thus reducing the response time when the page loads.
  • Once the CDN is set up, your content (images, videos…) is cached on proxy servers and loaded from a server closer to your visitor’s location, which reduces response time and increases the speed of loading.
  • For our clients, we use the Cloudfare CDN service, which we set up for them and which is standard for all the sites we manage.

6. Quality Hosting

If you think that you have tried everything to speed up your website, but you are still not getting the expected results, you should consider a new hosting provider. At Zeni, we can offer you hosting that will make your website faster. We can also help with speeding up your site and increasing your traffic. Get in touch and we’ll be happy to help

Zeni and WordCamp Brno 2019

Zeni and WordCamp Brno 2019

On 26 October 2019, the third annual WordCamp conference was held at Brno Congress Center. The members of our Zeni team actively participated in the organization as always! David took over the role of the main organizer for the second year in a row and he was even a member of the organizing team in the first year. Bruno and Róbert joined the organizers for the second time as well and Bruno also helped to organize the first year as a volunteer.

Just like last year, Zeni the Koala had the honour of belonging to the main sponsors of the event. The first part of her funding was sent to the headquarters to fully cover the costs of the WCB and the second one was invested into trees and everything else needed to create a new fruit orchard. This orchard of 50 trees was created the day after the event in Otnice village as a result of a day-long tiring cooperation of a team of volunteers composed of our team’s representatives, other participants of the event and some of local residents in order to reset the carbon footprint these 3 years of WCB caused.

A total of 222 tickets were sold. This magical number proves a nice growth in comparison with the last year even though the organizers were hoping to sell at least 300.

David welcomed everyone at 9.05 AM and the series of lectures could finally begin. Since it was perfectly scheduled, the eager and excited Zeni the Koala gave the whole organizing team a huge thumbs up. The conference was accompanied by a pleasant and friendly atmosphere. All the speakers prepared their lectures very well and Zeni often couldn’t decide between the halls A, B and C. Luckily, this aspect was well-thought-out by the organizers and the streams of the lectures will be uploaded on the official WordCamp website and on the YouTube channel. The photos from the event are already on the WordCamp Brno Facebook profile. In all the halls and even the foyer, the participants enthusiastically networked and discussed various WordPress topics. A whole bunch of good friends gathered there, including: girls and boys from BrilloJán Bočínec with colleagues from Webicon Karol VorosKatarína NovotnáAdam LaitaIvo Macek and many others.

The excellent catering was provided by the company Rychlík Catering for the third time. The participants could enjoy their morning on a coffee break in the form of delicious sandwiches, baguettes, fresh fruit and delicious sweets, which indeed made Zeni’s mouth water even though none of it could ever top the eucalyptus leaves. The lunch certainly pleased all fans of the Czech cuisine and even vegans. In the afternoon, the attendants were offered a nice coffe break once again and a delicious dinner in the form of burgers and a warm buffet was served at the after party in the evening. The after party ended around midnight and all of the feedback respondents were satisfied with both the location and the available service.

Thanks to the large number of sponsors, it was possible to organize the event in a larger area with numerous stands offering many practial gifts and surprises. Zeni got a nice water bottle and also a plenty of pens which will definitely come in handy when she will start scribbling a new plan for an another space adventure in her teeny-tiny diary.

At every WordCamp conference, attendants receive a commemorative gift. This year, everybody got a T-shirt with the Brno Wapuu print. Zeni the Koala has fallen head over heels in love with Wapuu and she is wearing the shirt literally always with the only exception of the painful moments spent in her cockpit impatiently watching the washing machine drum. Not only does it smell like eucalyptus thanks to our band new fabric softener, but it is also made of a great material and can be worn on every occasion thanks to the fine print.

The entire Zeni team really enjoyed the conference and we are already looking forward to other similar event.

Zeni and WordCamp Bratislava 2019

Zeni and WordCamp Bratislava 2019

On the 12th of October 2019, the 8th year of the local WordCamp conference was held in FIIT STU in Bratislava, Slovakia. Zeni koala and her teammates simply couldn’t miss the opportunity to attend this event.

She hit the road to Bratislava the day before the event in order to steal the best possible places for her team. She was travelling by her superb Earth buggy called Dacia Duster.

On the same day, all attendants had a chance to participate in the Contributor Day and support the local community. Our team was represented there by Róbert Jurinek. Later that evening, David and Bruno Dirbák gladly accepted the invitation to the speakers’ dinner with loads of great good and topics to discuss in a very interesting company. The whole debate was passing in a friendly manner as always and everyone was already looking forward to star on a stage on the following day.

In the next morning at half past 8, David fired up the engine of our koala roving vehicle and we all set off towards the faculty. Then at precisely 9 AM, Peter Nemčok started the event with an opening speech.

Zeni Koala truly appreciated the organizers’ attitude towards the beginner speakers. This year’s WordCamp indeed revolved around this field’s new faces since most of the speakers were newbies.

Our team representatives David and Bruno Dirbák took the roles of the speakers.

Bruno really succeedeed with his workshop “How to Build a Site in Divi Builder” since his audience managed to fill the full capacity of the hall for 70 people.

Bruno:
“I was seriously nervous since the morning because I had no idea if I should wear the blue shirt or the light blue shirt with tiny squares. I was also scared that my hair won’t look good and I will just stand there awkwardly. In the end, everything fortunately turned out well and I could finally get going with David. We arrived at the place and I was unbelievably preparing for my perfomance for the next 2 hours. I wanted everything to be perfect, every comma, every dot. And it’s here! It’s my turn! Let’s hurry to the hall! I showed up, plugged the computer into the data projector and immediately started my presentation. I was feeling nervous at first, but my nervousness gradually decreased so much that I was eventually feeling like I’m standing in front of my friends. There were plenty of questions at the end of my lecture and I’m glad I managed to answer all of them immediately without any hesitation. I’m incredibly excited to have been given such an opportunity. This experience has taught me a lot and I already know that I want to pass on information in this form again when I get another chance in the future.”

David finished a series of lectures with his “Don’t Make Sites For a Bag of Pears”.

David:
“I had a terrible stage fright since the morning. It was my first perfomance in front of so many people and I was even supposed to finish the entire lecture day in the main hall. The lecture was aimed at colleagues from the industry who sometimes make sites for a small amount of money and then eventually regret it. I also used some of my own practice in it. Even though my presentation was supposed to last 25 minutes and I carefully prepared every single one, I finished already after 18 minutes. No one had any questions so my lecture ended 20 minutes earlier. That shows that there is still room for some improvement. I hope this wasn’t my last speaking on WordCamp and I will get another opportunity to pass on my practice experience to my less experienced colleagues.”

The entire conference went smootly, exactly on schedule. It was accompanied by a pleasant atmosphere, perfectly prepared catering and a nice finish. Zeni koala and the whole team were pleasantly tired and full of new experiences. They eventually returned to their cockpits in order to rest, relax and enjoy the goodies in the form of eucalyptus leaves. For this is Zeni koala’s most beloved activity.
